Amazon Tax Exemption Program
The Amazon Tax Exemption Program allows you to proactively take advantage of your tax exempt status for future purchases from either Amazon.com LLC or Amazon Digital Services, Inc. In order to establish and maintain your tax exempt status, we require that you provide us with a valid tax exemption certificate for the state(s) where you are located, and that you update your certificate on a periodic basis in accordance with the state laws and/or our Terms & Conditions.
We’re accepting certificates for purchases from Amazon.com, LLC and Amazon Digital Services, Inc. through this program.
Visit the Amazon Tax Exemption Program link in Your Account and upload your tax exemption certificate(s) using the file upload option. When you’ve completed the process, you’ll see a message indicating that you’ve successfully uploaded your tax exemption information.
Our Customer Service team will review your documentation within 3 business days. If we need additional information or documentation in order to process your exemption documents, our Customer Service team will contact you by e-mail.
Upload Restrictions
The file size of your document must not exceed 4MB. We accept .pdf, .jpg, .gif, .png, doc & docx file formats. Please make sure you have not exceeded the file size and are using the correct file type.
Confirming Your Status
When you have completed the process you will see a message “You’ve successfully uploaded your tax exemption information.”
You may view your Amazon Tax Exemption status by returning to the Amazon Tax Exemption Program section of Your Account.
Your account will list the current status of tax exemptions that have been processed by Amazon Customer Service. If you’ve recently submitted an exemption certificate, please allow 3 business days for Amazon to review your documentation.
The Amazon Tax Exemption Program only applies to purchases made directly from Amazon.com LLC or Amazon Digital Services, Inc., and ordered via an Amazon.com customer account. Sales tax may still be charged on items you order from any other seller who lists products for sale via the Amazon.com website. If sales tax is still showing on your orders from Amazon.com LLC or Amazon Digital Services, Inc. in the states where you have active exemptions please contact us via email at auto-exempt@amazon.com.
If it’s been 3 business days and your exemption status is not activated, please contact Customer Service at auto-exempt@amazon.com and they will be glad to assist you.
Maintaining Your Exemption Status
Your exemption will remain active until the expiration of your tax exemption certificate. To retain your tax exemption, you must submit an updated exemption certificate before the expiration of the current certificate. Applicable expiration dates are noted in our database. Before your current certificate expires, we’ll send you an email reminder to update your certificate.
You can access your Amazon.com account, including the information on your tax exempt purchase status, by using the same customer account login and password information you have used in the past.
Amazon.com will not issue a new Tax Exempt ID number to you. You may access your account and tax exempt status, including your state specific information, from “Your Account” page by navigating to the Settings section and selecting “Amazon Tax Exemption Program.”
In order to comply with state and local tax laws, we require you to submit the specific exemption documents for each applicable state when claiming sales tax exemption.
Please review our Tax Exempt Help content or contact your state’s Department of Revenue for state-specific requirements when making tax exempt purchases.
